Coastal GasLink
CIVIL CONSTRUCTION
ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE
EXCAVATION
This remote pipeline infrastructure project in northwestern British Columbia required the construction and expansion of access roads between Kitimat and Terrace. M3 Drilling & Blasting played a crucial role in widening existing roads, creating new routes, and ensuring safe vehicular access in challenging, mountainous terrain.

Scope of Work:
M3 Drilling & Blasting deployed four drill units to perform precise drilling and controlled blasting along the proposed roadway corridors. The team was responsible for:
- Initial road widening: Safely removing rock and other materials to expand narrow or treacherous segments of existing roads.
- New road construction: Blasting and grading in remote locations to create brand-new access routes for pipeline development.
- Terrain management: Implementing benching and other techniques to stabilize steep slopes, reduce risk of rockfalls, and ensure long-term safety.
Challenges & Solutions
Remote Location & Logistical Complexity
- Challenge: Transporting equipment and materials into rugged, mountainous regions.
- Solution: M3 arranged efficient mobilization and onsite assembly of drilling rigs, collaborating closely with local subcontractors and indigenous partners to navigate remote areas safely.
Strict Environmental Standards
- Challenge: Protecting sensitive habitats, waterways, and wildlife along the corridor.
- Solution: Employed controlled blast designs and dust-suppression measures, coordinating with environmental teams to minimize ecological impact.
Steep Terrain & Safety
- Challenge: The presence of steep grades and potential rockfall hazards.
- Solution: Used advanced drilling and benching methods, combined with robust ground-support techniques, ensuring the stability of slopes and road cuts.
Overall Impact:
Despite the inherent difficulties of working in such a challenging environment, the project progressed on schedule, providing essential access for the Coastal GasLink pipeline. M3 Drilling & Blasting’s expertise in drill-blast methods and commitment to safety:
- Reduced downtime through efficient planning and execution.
- Enhanced infrastructure in the region by improving and adding roadways that may continue to benefit local communities.
- Maintained high environmental standards to preserve BC’s natural landscapes.
